Easily, the best bookstore in Santa Fe - if not one of the best liberal arts bookstores in the country. Other local bookstores cater more to the popular demand and the interests of the tourist, faced out shelves featuring best-sellers and guides and such. There is no fault in this, but after making the rounds, it appeared that Santa Fe had no great bookstore - (excepting the excellent photo-eye for photography.) Sadly, such is the case for so many cities around the country in this Age of Amazon. Then I walk into St John's bookstore, immediately smiling at the huge full bookcase of excellently curated poetry, delighting over an alcove of literature with stacks of Collected Borges in the overstock, the complete catalog of Cormac McCarthy, every available edition of Moby-Dick in print, entire end-caps for Greek and Homer, multiple translations of the Divine Comedy, stacks and stacks of Plato, multiple copies of Wittgenstein's Philosophical Investigations, an entire case of Loeb's, taking sweet joy in a razor sharp philosophy section and classical secondary texts. Of course, this being St John's, it all makes sense. The manager/ buyer introduced herself to me. After I expressed happy amazement to have found them, complimenting the elegant sensibilities reflected on the shelves, she said that they are often unfortunately overlooked as a general bookstore. But they shouldn't be! St John's Bookstore is a local treasure, a beautiful resource. Quickly, I have to add as I looked through the poetry and drama sections, I was perplexed at not finding any Shakespeare. There are quirky odd absences in every bookstore, but this seemed negligent. Then I turned the corner to find an entire case of Shakespeare, including a substantial number of editions of the Sonnets and commentaries about them. I could've laughed out loud! Don't be put off by the notion that they are an academic bookstore, they are so much more. Fascinating titles and literary treasures were around every corner. It's a bibliophile's paradise just waiting to serendipitously astound you.

Typical liberal arts school bookstore. Engaging students around.

I've been going here for 12 years. One of the great quirky bookstores in the US.

It's a pretty great bookstore. That old-school coz -cure tall narrow shelves. St John's corriculum is pretty focused, so the range of selection isn't really the selling point here.

Great selection of books at a high price. Don't buy the pens there, you can get free ones at the admin offices
