John Ferguson, the agency manager, was one of the most helpful people we met. The counter is extremely convenient, and the car was great!
You can have a car 'reserved' weeks in advance but the rude staff will still refuse to rent it to you. Personal hygiene is an issue with their staff. I hope they don't clean the cars, which wait in the lot, unused.
Sept. 9, 2017. Arrived at the Santa Fe Airport at 7:45 pm. We had a confirmed reservation with a pick up time of 8:00 pm. When we went to the Avis window to sign for the car, it was closed. Before making the reservation, I had confirmed the agency would be open. In fact, the stated closure time is 11:00 pm. However, at the window, there was a sign stating they would close at 8 pm on Sept. 9. I did not receive any email notification of the early closure. I called Avis to find out how we could get our promised car. The person that answered said all he could do was to manage reservations. He said there was no local contact person that could be reached. I asked to speak to his supervisor. The supervisor said we were out of luck and no one could help us until the next day when customer service would be available. Luckily, at a cost of $26 each (total of $52) we were able to take the very last shuttle to our destination. But now we are still without a car or any transportation. I will never use this company again. I do plan to call customer service in the morning to repeat what happened and to demand reimbursement of the shuttle cost.
Great folks there really took care of me by upgrading me to a much nicer car. Hertz had absolutely nothing available for the weekend before the eclipse, and not only did Avis have a great rate, but actually had cars! Friendly, helpful staff. Tip: prepay for a substantial discount off the already reasonable rates.
BE WARNED! If you rent from Avis at the Santa Fe Airport, you very well may get charged for damage you did not incur, and when you challenge it both on a national and a local level, you'll be met with absolute disrespect and disinterest. We have been using Avis happily for decades, but now we would rather pay a few bucks more for another rental company and steer clear of this kind of corruption and attempted theft.
Last year (2016), we rented a large SUV to drive back and forth to St. Louis to visit for Thanksgiving. We returned the vehicle and it had incurred no damage during our rental. We got a notice shortly thereafter that we were being billed for a broken windshield, $200. Total scam. We have been going back and forth with corporate for a year, and they are insisting that the damage happened while we were using the car. Today I called the local branch and spoke to someone named John. I explained the situation and he said I should call the national #. I told him I had already done that and while we were dealing with the back and forth ridiculousness, I wanted to let him know what happened at his branch. He could not have acted more like a surly, complicit, rude human being. When he said he couldn't do anything about it, I said, "Don't you want to know what happened at your branch? Aren't you at least curious to find out who was working that day and checked in the car so that you could know that this kind of dishonesty is going on? Don't you care about your branch's reputation?" He refused to get it. He never said, "Wow, that sounds awful. Thank you for letting me know. That's not the kind of operation we want to run, etc." Finally he told me once again to call the national # (which I had done a long time ago, and he knew this) and I asked him what his name was. "John." "What's your last name?" "John's good enough." "So now you don't even want to tell me who you are?" "Oh, man, lady, I can't believe this..." So I said goodbye and hung up.
