There is storied *history* here as well. Maria's is located very close to the original site of the *Territorial* Prison, established in 1850, that continued to serve as the *State* Prison until the mid-1950s. Maria purchased some prison bricks and boards and recycled them into her then-new restaurant. Be sure to ask where (in the since-expanded layout) to see them. If you're lucky, and a party of no more than 4, you may be able to score one of the two brick-lined booths in the bar. Also in the bar is a wall built from prison boards.
Disappointing! After reading reviews, was really excited to try Maria's. Sadly, the service was extremely slow and some of the worst I've ever experienced in a restaurant. In the area we were seated, there were several unsatisfied diners who were visited by the manager. The manager never even paid attention to us... guess we didn't complain like others. Terrible experience for a first time at Maria's. On a good note, the food is tasty when you finally get it delivered to your table.
Back to a nice New Mexican Cuisine spot rather than the.dive bar that it was for a couple of decades. ( the reconversion took place several years ago but I'm new back in town after a long time and was pleasantly surprised. ) the menu is not pages and pages long but the food is good and the prices are reasonable. I'm glad I ventured in for a look once again. Some walls as in the photo I'm attaching are built of the red bricks from the Territorial Prison that was replaced in 1952 even though New Mexico had become a state in 1912.
Do you like tequila? Maria's has more Tequilas than food items on its menu.
Now some of the reviews say "Slow paced" umm, you can say that again! The waitress was slow. The bus guy was friendly and attentive I think He should have had the tip, he spent more time at our table than she did. The food was good. A regular let us know that the appetizeres were large enough for a meal, and she was right! We asked for our tab, and we finally got it... we noticed our neighboring table still waiting to have his credit card brought back 5-10 min waiting so I suggested cash, and we paid exactly enough and left. Say hi to Randy, he sure was friendly and helpful!
We asked Google for a New Mexican restaurant near by, this did look promising. Not on the plaza, not full of tourists.. just a mom & pop Santa Fe restaurant.
Loved the cuisine that is new to us, after decades of Northern Indian and Pakistani delights. The waitstaff is warm, energetic and sweet. The decor soothes. A wonderful evening.
I've lived in Santa Fé off and on for since 1972, and there is hardly a place to be found that continues its fine tradition as much as Maria's for good food at reasonable prices.
